Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
for Online Classes and Summer Camps
Q. Does Landry
Academy have a statement of faith?
A. Yes..
- There is one God who is infinitely
perfect, existing eternally in three persons; Father, Son
and Holy Spirit.
- Jesus Christ is true God and true man. He
was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin
Mary. He died upon the cross and all who believe in Him
are justified on the ground of His shed blood. He arose
from the dead according to the Scriptures.
- The Holy Spirit is a divine person sent to
convict men of sin, and to indwell, guide, teach and
empower the believer.
- The Bible (Old and New Testaments),
without error as originally given, were inspired by God
and are a complete revelation of His will for the
salvation of men. They constitute the divine and only
rule of Christian faith and life.
- Man was originally created in the image
and likeness of God. He fell through disobedience. All
men are born with a sinful nature, and separated from
the life of God, and can be saved only through the
atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- Salvation has been provided through Jesus
Christ and those who repent and believe in
Him are born of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift of
eternal life, and become the children of God.

Q. If we need to cancel our
registration for an online class, do you offer
a refund or a school credit?
When a family registers for a class,
we consider that to be a commitment to taking the class. We
reserve a spot in the class for that student, add them to
the teacher's roster for that class, and commit the income
to that teacher. This assures that the student has a spot in
the class and may prevent other students from registering
for that class.
We do realize that circumstances may
arise which would prohibit you from taking a class for which
you are registered. In that situation, this is our
cancellation
policy:

refund. No refunds after April 1 for Summer classes.

semester class). During summer school, a one semester class
meets every weekday for 90 minutes for three weeks (15 classes).
A two semester class meets every weekday for 90 minutes for six
weeks (30 classes).
Students are limited to two simultaneous courses during the
summer.

A. Registration closes when classes

Q. Should students purchase
their own textbook and other class materials?
A. Students are responsible for obtaining textbooks and
other materials that may be required for the class. Textbooks
may be purchased used at a variety of sites online. Other
materials required for classes are typically minimal, if any are
required at all. Exceptions to that may be science classes
which may require lab materials, computer classes which may
require software, art classes that may require supplies, etc.
Q. Should we also
purchase the teacher guide or any teacher materials?
A. No, there is no need for parents
or students to have teacher materials. The class teacher
will handle all the teaching, assignments, testing, grading,
etc.
Q. When does registration open for a
school year?
A. Registration for a school year
(fall and spring semesters) typically opens one year prior
to the beginning of classes. This enables us to offer very
substantial early registration discounts.
Q. Do some classes
have prerequisites and do the prerequisite class have to be
taken at Landry Academy?
Prerequisites are a general
guideline to help parents register their children for the
most appropriate class. If a class has a prerequisite that
is one of our other classes, it does
not mean that the student has to have taken that
class with Landry Academy or that they have to have covered
everything in the description of the prerequisite class. It
simply means that they should have generally covered most of
the topics in the prerequisite class description. We leave
the decision of class placement to the parents. Please
contact us if you have questions regarding class placement.
Q. Are your online teachers Christians?
A. Yes, we interview prospective
teachers and require that they
affirm and sign our statement of faith.
Q. Are classes taught
from a Biblical, creationist worldview?
A. Yes, they are.
Q. How are
assignments submitted to teachers and how are tests taken?
A. Assignments are
easily submitted through our online system. Tests are also taken
online.
Q. Do you have a
sample class that I can see?
A. Yes,
to access recordings of actual classes and of our free 30
minute online seminars which are also held in our
"classroom".
Q. Do teachers
handle all aspects of the class, such as assignments,
grading tests, and issuing a final grade for the class?
A. Yes, teachers
handle all aspects of the class, including assignments,
grading tests, and issuing a final grade for the class.
Q. Do your classes
use physical textbooks or online textbooks?
A. Most of our
classes use physical textbooks.
Q. Are students required to
attend the live
classes?
A. Students are strongly encouraged to attend live classes when
possible, but are typically not required to attend live classes. If
they miss a live class, recordings of each class are available
on the student's class web page, and they are still responsible
for assignments given in those classes. They can access class
recordings 24/7 at their convenience. The exception to this may
be foreign language classes where pronunciation is an
important part of the class, and some classes such as
literature and history where class discussion is an important part of
the class.
Q. What's the significance of
class numbers and the "target grade range"?
A.
Classes numbered in the "100's" are generally targeted toward 4th -
6th graders, "200's" toward 7th - 9th graders, and "300's"
toward 9th - 12th graders. Beyond that each class has a
specific "target grade range". However, these are only
guidelines. Parents should feel free to use their judgment
as to class levels for their children. Also, the class number
sequence (example: 201, 202, 203..) usually does NOT
indicate a required sequence or that "203" is a higher level
class than "201" . Where there are prerequisites, it's
indicated in the class information.
Q. Are young students (4th-6th
grade) able to handle online classes?
A. Yes, most young students thrive in
online classes. Our 4th-6th grade classes are presented at a
basic level and are great for training students to
listen in class, take notes, meet deadlines, study,
etc. Online classes are the future at all levels, including
universities. And, a class at this level
is wonderful training for students as they prepare for the
middle and high school level years.
Q. Are the "advanced" classes "AP" classes?
A. No. For us to call a class
"AP" it must meet and be limited to certain criteria set by
the company who administers AP. We don't choose to be
limited by this and we believe that our "advanced" classes
are at least as rigorous as "AP" classes, and in most cases
exceed expectations of "AP" courses. We offer "Advanced"
courses in subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
If your student is interested in taking a particular AP
exam, please discuss this with your Landry Academy teacher.
It's ultimately up to parents or schools to
designate courses on student's transcripts as they see
appropriate.
Q. Do you offer "honors" courses?
A. We don't classify courses as
"honors" because there is no standard for "honors"
classification. We believe that the rigor of many of our
courses would merit "honors" classification in many schools.
It's ultimately up to homeschooling parents to
designate courses on student's transcripts as they see
appropriate.
Q. What is expected of
students in online classes?
A. We expect that students treat
their teacher and fellow students with respect and that they
follow guidelines for appropriate behavior in class.
Students are expected to attend class - either live or
recorded (they are not required to attend the live classes)
on a weekly basis. They are also expected to keep up with
assignments, etc. as directed by their teacher.
Q. What is Landry Academy's
commitment to the online class student?
A. We commit to providing weekly
Biblical worldview classes taught by teachers with expertise
in their fields. Teachers provide, testing, feedback, and
assistance to students when needed outside of class via
email, telephone, or in our online classrooms. An official
final grade is issued for each class a student takes.
Q. What are the technical
requirements for online classes?
A. There are no special
requirements for attending our online classes. We use the
Elluminate / Blackboard system which we believe is the best system
available for online classes. It works well regardless of
the type of computer you have or the speed of your
connection. There is no special software that we need to
send you and no special configurations to deal with. It's a
simple process of going to a web site to access live and
recorded classes.
Q. When class times are stated
on the site, which time zone is it referring to?
A. All times on the site are U.S.
eastern time zone.
Q. How would you describe the
rigor and workload of Landry Academy classes?
A. Landry Academy classes would be
described as "college prep" in their level of rigor, designed to
adequately prepare students for college and life. Approximate
workload per week in addition to the 90 minute class is:
100 level courses (4th-6th grade) - 2 to 3 hours per week
200 level courses (7th-9th grade) - 3 to 5 hours per week
300 level courses (9th-12th grade) - 4 to 7 hours per week
